Ashley Shew
Ashley Shew (Associate Professor of Science, Technology, and Society at Virginia Tech) is a philosopher of technology with work in animal studies, disability studies, biotech-ethics, and emerging technologies. She is a current co-editor-in-chief of the journal Techné: Research in Philosophy and Technology, a co-editor of three edited books (Spaces for the Future with Joe Pitt, Feedback Loops with Andrew Garnar, and Reimagining Philosophy and Technology, Reinventing Ihde with Glen Miller), and author of Animal Constructions and Technological Knowledge (2017). She is published in Nursing Clio, IEEE Technology & Society, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, and Nature. Her new book Against Technoableism: Rethinking Who Needs Improvement comes out later this year, and she is PI on a new Mellon Foundation-funded project called Just Dis Tech (2023-2025), which engages disability arts and culture to promote humanistic reflection to better honor disabled expertise, especially in the context of science and technology.
