Aki Ishida

Aki Ishida

Aki Ishida is a registered architect, Associate Professor of Architecture, and the Interim Associate Director of the School of Architecture + Design. She is also a Senior Fellow of Virginia Tech’s Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT) where she collaborates with engineers and artists and served as Director of Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities (IIHCC), the university’s trans-college initiative. Her body of work across research, teaching, and engagement is situated in three areas within the larger practice and discourse of architecture, often crossing disciplinary boundaries. First is studies of building materials in wider cultural and social contexts. Second is studies of human-centered built environment in relation to health and wellbeing. Third is experimentation in a hybrid environment that combines physical construct with projected light, with output ranging from art installations to full-scale simulations of medical spaces.

She holds a Bachelor of Architecture with distinction from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University. She practiced architecture for 17 years in New York City prior to arriving at Virginia Tech.
