Vivian Pinn Speaks on “Pioneering Women in the Future of Work”

We are very excited to have Dr. Vivian Pinn join us on Friday, March 28 (from 9:30–11:00am EST), as a keynote speaker in the Center for Future Work Places and Practices (CFWPP) “Women in the Future of Work” speaker series. Dr. Pinn is a lifelong advocate for women and women's health. In this lecture, she will discuss her journey as a pioneer in medicine and healthcare and research leadership. Her presentation will focus on her work as an advocate for women in STEM and discuss the future of women in research and medicine.

Dr. Pinn grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia. She attended Wellesley College and entered medical school at the University of Virginia as the only African-American and only woman in her class. She completed her residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1970 in pathology. She was the first African American woman to chair an academic pathology department in the United States, at Howard University College of Medicine in 1982. In 1991, she was appointed as the first full time Director of the Office of Research on Women's Health at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She has received numerous awards and honors and was inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1994. In 1995 she was elected to the Institute of Medicine. She is currently retired and serves as a special volunteer for the NIH and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. She is also a former senior scientist emerita of the Fogarty International Center.

The event will be jointly sponsored by the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Dr. Pinn will be introduced by Dean Lee Learman. The talk is followed by a networking session at Virginia Tech between 11am-12pm.
