Alan Tomkins, the acting Director of NSF’s Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES) in the Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE), will give a talk on “Applying for NSF Funding: An Overview from the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences.”

The Center for Future Work Places and Practices at Virginia Tech will host the talk on March 13, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Room 2420 at the North End Center.

In this presentation, Dr. Tomkins will talk about NSF’s grant process and SBE programs, provide tips for writing a competitive proposal, and discuss different types of grants. He will leave time for participants to ask questions and follow up on matters of their interest.

Dr. Tomkins is willing to provide brief feedback on potential proposal ideas if they are one page at most and are received at least one week before the presentation. Proposals should identify the basic science idea(s) that will be tested/examined in the project, indicate the methods that will be used, and note the broader impacts of the proposed research.

Dr. Tomkins can be reached at atomkins@nsf.gov.
